Remote Control Tool Configuration

This guide describes how to configure the Remote Control Tool in SoftwareCentral. The viewer runs from a network share, so it does not have to be deployed to the client computers. You set it up in Configuration Manager and in SoftwareCentral.

Viewer permissions Network share One path per site

1 Before you start

The Remote Control Tool needs two things: Configuration Manager must allow the remote control, and SoftwareCentral must know where the viewer, CmRcViewer.exe, is for each site.

To enable remote control from SoftwareCentral you first need to set Configuration Manager up for remote control. Use this guide from Microsoft to set up remote control: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/gg682148.aspx

For more details and advanced settings, see External Tools Configuration. Once the tool is configured, see Remote Control Tool for how to use it.

2 Allow the operators in Configuration Manager

Every user of this tool must be defined as a Viewer in Configuration Manager.

Where in Configuration ManagerWhat to set
Administration › Client Settings › Default Client Settings › Remote ToolsSet Enable Remote Control on clients to Enabled, then add the users with Set Viewers next to Permitted viewers of Remote Control and Remote Assistance.

3 Put the viewer on a share

The tool does not need to be deployed to the client computers. It can run directly from a network share.

  1. Create a network share. If you have multiple sites, you can create a share for each site or use the same share for all sites.
  2. Allow all users to access the share with read and execute permission.
  3. Copy the content from the [<SoftwareCentral install dir>\Tools\CmRcViewer\] folder to the newly created share.
  4. Enter the UNC path to the CmRcViewer.exe for the newly created share in SoftwareCentral › Settings › SCCM › Shares › Remote Control Tool Share Path. Step 4 is described in the next section.
Copy the whole folder Copy all of Tools\CmRcViewer\, including its 00000409 subfolder, not just CmRcViewer.exe. The same folder holds SoftwareCentralClient.exe, which SoftwareCentral starts from the same share when it registers the link on a computer.

This is all you need to do on the share. You are now ready to use the Remote Control Tool.

4 Enter the path in SoftwareCentral

Click Settings, then SCCM › Shares.

The Remote Control Tool Share Path: (CmRcViewer.exe) row lists every site with its own path box. Enter the UNC path to CmRcViewer.exe for each site, then click Save Settings. A site with an empty box has no path saved, so the Remote Control Tool cannot use it.

Settings, SCCM, Shares: the Package Share, Remote Control Tool Share Path (CmRcViewer.exe) and OS Share rows, each with a Site column and a path column. The menu on the left shows Shares selected under SCCM.
Remote Control Tool Share Path under Settings › SCCM › Shares: one path per site. The site and server names in this picture are masked.

5 Best practice

  • Give the operators read and execute rights only. Every operator needs read and execute permission on the share. Keep write access to the share for the administrators who maintain the viewer.
  • Copy the whole folder. SoftwareCentral finds SoftwareCentralClient.exe in the same folder as the path you enter, so a share with only CmRcViewer.exe is not enough.
  • Enter a path for every site that uses remote control. The path is stored per site. A site without a path cannot start the tool for its computers.
  • Add every operator as a Viewer first. The tool is only useful for the users who are defined as Viewers in Configuration Manager.

6 Troubleshooting

SymptomCauseWhat to do
The log says No path for the remote control viewer is specified under Settings. No path is saved for the site you are working on.Enter the UNC path to CmRcViewer.exe for that site under Settings › SCCM › Shares, then click Save Settings.
The log says Failed to register the SoftwareCentral Client to the URI Scheme on client 'name'.SoftwareCentral could not register the SoftwareCentral: link on that computer. The log entry has the error.Check the share path and the share permissions, then read the error in the log entry. If you register the link yourself, see the setting Manually register SoftwareCentral to a URI Scheme.
The Remote Control Tool does not start when you connect to a computer. The steps above are not all complete, or the tool is not set up in the more detailed manual.Check the steps above. If the tool still does not start, see External Tools Configuration, which describes how the SoftwareCentral Client launches programs such as the Remote Control Tool.
